Rhode Island Energy Launches Electric Meter Upgrades

Home Posted on May 06, 2025

Rhode Island Energy has begun upgrading electric meters across the state with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology, starting in Westerly. The new meters will give customers better insight into their energy use, help improve service reliability, and support faster outage detection. Installations are underway and will continue statewide over the next two years.

  • Rhode Island Energy will notify residents ahead of the scheduled replacement date.
  • No appointments are required.
  • Contractors will visit homes directly, with each installation typically taking about 15 minutes.
  • Residents should be aware that a brief interruption of electric service may occur during the swap.
  • Customers do have the option to opt out of receiving an AMI meter; however, doing so comes with a one-time fee and an ongoing monthly maintenance charge.
  • See current meters checked and meters replaced map.

Residents are encouraged to visit Rhode Island Energy’s website for more information on the meter upgrade program and the opt-out process: https://rienergy.com/site/more/frequent-questions/advanced-meters.
