NO SALT ON NEW SIDEWALKS: Protect New Sidewalks with NO SALT in Designated Areas
The Town of Barrington has completed new sidewalks on Maple Avenue, Lamson Road, and County Road near Riverside. With winter approaching, avoid using rock salt to protect these surfaces.
Rock salt (sodium chloride) can damage new concrete, especially during the first few seasons. It melts snow and ice, allowing water to seep in and refreeze. This creates small cracks that lead to flaking, permanent damage, and shorter sidewalk life.
To keep sidewalks clear and safe, we strongly urge residents to shovel or snow-blow regularly and commit to using sand, not salt, for traction.
Let’s take action together to protect our new sidewalks. Your commitment is vital to keeping Barrington safe and walkable for everyone this winter. Please stay vigilant and encourage your neighbors to join in this important effort.
