Help Protect Barrington’s Public Waters When Fertilizing

Home Posted on March 12, 2025

As a friendly reminder, we are asking Barrington residents to pitch in to protect the public waters of the Town of Barrington through environmentally sound care of lawns and gardens starting April 2nd, and by adhering to a 2020 Town Ordinance limiting the use of certain fertilizers that degrade local waters.

Despite the many improvements that have been implemented to protect the Barrington-Palmer-Warren Rivers watershed, activities carried out within Barrington have resulted in substantial degradation of Barrington’s public waters.

Please note Ordinance No. 2020-17 – prohibits the application or deposit of nitrogen and phosphorus-based fertilizers:

  • Within 100 feet of Public Waters Resources Areas
  • From October 31st to April 1st unless specifically approved in advance by the Town Council.
  • Within 24 hours before or during a rain event forecasted by the National Weather Service resulting in more than .5 inches of precipitation in a 24-hour period.

This is an important step towards conserving resources and protecting our environment. We urge all residents to comply with the ordinance and help protect our environment.
