Property Tax Exemptions
There are two types of Elderly Exemptions for age 65 & over. Property owners are eligible for one exemption per property. Applications are available early September and are Due October 31.
An Income-Based Elderly exemption was added in 2017. Applicants need to file each year for the income-based exemption. There are twenty (20) different possible tax credits based on income level. The list of these exemption amounts can be found here.
A Flat Rate Elderly exemption that is not income-based is available. After the initial application, you do not need to file the flat rate application every year. The current tax credit for the flat Elderly exemption is $229.20.
100% Disabled: (Income based- same scale as Elderly). Applications Due March 31.
Veteran's Exemption - RIGL 44-3-5.2 $341.56 Credit
VETERAN 100% Disabled (service connected): $341.56 Credit
Widow of a Veteran (not re-married): $341.56 Credit
Gold Star Parent: $10,350.46 Credit
Veteran Modified Housing (service-connected): veteran who lives in "specially adapted housing" 100% Exempt
Gold Star Spouse: 100% Exempt
Prisoner of War: $5,175.23 Credit

Blind (certified by Ophthalmologist): $35,500
Poverty or Infirmity Exemption RIGL 44-3-3 (16)
To qualify for any of the above referenced exemptions, one must be a resident of the Town of Barrington. For further information contact the Assessor's Office. Applications are generally revised annually and some are only available during the application period.
