Health and Dental
Employees who regularly work 35 hours a week and who maintain continuous regular full-time employee status are eligible to enroll in our Group Health Insurance Plan as well as Group Dental Insurance offered by the Town. Employees working less than 30 hours per week are not eligible for group coverage, however, may be eligible to enroll in the State of Rhode Island's Health Exchange Program.
The Town of Barrington offers a health insurance plan through its healthcare provider, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island and dental insurance through Delta Dental of RI. The Town of Barrington pays 80% of the cost for both the health and dental. Employees contribute 20% to the cost of their plan. The Town offers Individual and Family Plans.
Changes to health insurance plans can be made during the Annual Open Enrollment Period (effective for July 1st) or following a qualifying life event, such as a marriage or birth of a child. Qualified employees shall be eligible for individual or family coverage beginning on the first day of the month following one's initial date of City employment.

Benefit eligible employees receive life insurance as listed at no cost to them.
It is important that employees keep their beneficiary information up to date.

Retirement
All newly hired municipal employees are required to become members of a hybrid pension system to include the Municipal Employees Retirement System of the State of Rhode Island and TIAA Financial Services.
Employee pre-tax contributions include:
- For Municipal Employees - 2% to MERS (defined benefit plan) and 5% to TIAA (defined contribution plan)
- For Police Officers (hired after July 1, 2012) - 9% to MERS (definited benefit plan) and 3% to TIAA ( defined contribution plan)
ICMA - 457 Retirement Savings Plan
All regular Town employees are eligible to participate in the Town's 457 plan. The maximum amount an employee can contribute on an annual basis is determined by the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). A 457 plan is designed to supplement your retirement income.
While a pension and/or Social Security may go a long way, they are unlikely to be enough. Saving to your 457 plan can help you maintain your desired standard of living. Contributions into your 457 plan are pre-tax and reduce your taxable income for the year.
